A TEACHER says her inspiration to hold a fundraiser tomorrow for her local regiment comes from seeing soldiers suffer life-changing injuries during their tour of Afghanistan.

Chepstow School’s Angela Jones lives in Beachley, close to the barracks of 1 Rifles.

She said many families have had to cope in the aftermath of their home-coming last November, many battling against serious injuries suffered during their six months in Helmand Province.

She told pupils at the school’s Bungalow Project of their plight and together with another teacher, Helene Roche, decided to take action. Ms Jones said: “It was the children who said we must do something.

A lot of people don’t realise a lot of the lads come back with lifechanging injuries and we can help the charity provide short or longterm care.” The school’s fashion show hopes to raise more than £1,000 for Care for Casualties, the 1 Rifles regimental charity.

It provides care for soldiers, adapting their homes for example following the loss of limbs.

Captain Matt Derby from the regiment will open the 7.30pm show, featuring collections from local traders Runway, Herbert Lewis, All About Eve, Viva Couture, Scandia, Eden Rose and Tutti Frutti Kids.

AM Nick Ramsay and MP David Davies are expected to be in the audience, along with proud families of serving soldiers.

At the event, sponsored by Mabey Bridge and Monmouthshire Housing Association, there will also be prizes presented to teams of pupils from Pembroke and Shirenewton primary schools, who won a competition to design T-shirts with a recycling or community message.

Tickets, priced at £5, are available from the school reception, Viva Couture or Runway.
