A CHARITY concert in memory of a Gwent teenager who died of cancer will star world-renowned jazz pianist Geoff Eales.

Jacob Eales, of Blackwood, died in 2009 aged just 15 following a six-year battle with the disease, after first being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2003.

Now, to mark the year that would have seen him celebrate his 18th birthday, his grandfather’s cousin Geoff Eales is holding a concert next week to raise money for the charity set up in his name.

Mr Eales, who has worked with stars such as Shirley Bassey, Michael Ball, Julie Andrews and Andrew Lloyd Webber, heard about Jacob’s Starz, which was set up on Jacob’s wishes to help youngsters like him, on a recent trip to Wales visiting family.

He was inspired by the former Pontllanfraith pupil’s bravery and immediately wanted to do something to help.

He said: “I was really touched by his story, it was a heart-rending story and I felt I wanted to do a concert and raise money for his charity.”

Mr Eales, who is originally from Aberbargoed and now lives in London, will bring his new band Isorhythm to Blackwood Miners’ Institute for the special gig on May 31.

There they will perform music from his latest jazz-rock fusion album Shifting Sands, as well as a specially written piece called Jacob’s Ladder, which he composed as a tribute to the youngster.

Tickets are £10 and can be bought by calling Blackwood Miners’ Institute box office on 01495 227206 .

Proceeds fromthe concert will go to Jacob’s Starz, which provides treats and days out for youngsters battling life-threatening conditions.
