A MAN who stole more than £350 worth of chewing gum in a trolley full of goods from a Newport supermarket was jailed yesterday.

Caerphilly magistrates sentenced Catlain Jora, 24, to eight weeks’ immediate custody after looking at his record of similar premeditated offending over a large geographical area.

Jora pleaded guilty to the theft of goods totalling £432.52 from Asda Duffryn, including packets of chewing gum amounting to £358.17.

Prosecutor Rhian Jones told Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on Monday that Jora was watched on CCTV taking the items before leaving without paying on May 26.

She said when challenged he became aggressive, shoving the trolley at a security guard.

Matthew Thomas, defending, said Jora came to the UK last year and works when he can.

He said the defendant wanted to make money to send back to his family in Romania.

Mr Thomas said Jora travelled from his home in Ledgers Road, Slough, with the intention of stealing from Asda and was ashamed.

Chairman of the bench, John Jenkins told him the magistrates discussed all options open to them, but believed a custodial sentence was necessary.
