POLICE have closed their investigation into the death of a Newport university student who died after jumping into a river.

Vithuran Sathiyaseelan, 17, described by the university as “bright and talented”

was a Sri Lankan student here on a student visa.

The Argus reported yesterday how divers from South Wales Police found the teenager’s body at 8.50pm on Tuesday. This followed calls that a boy had jumped around six feet off the riverbank of the Afon Llwyd, a tributary which feeds into the River Usk, and had not resurfaced.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said the case was nowbeing passed on to the coroner.
