A GROUP of schoolchildren stuck on a bus in the afternoon sun were given some welcome relief when an employee from a nearby supermarket came out and handed them all bottled water.

Agroup of 60 Year 5 and 6 pupils from St Joseph’s Primary School were on their way back from Spytty, where they have their PE lessons, when they got stuck in the heavy traffic on the Southern Distributor Road caused by a car crash on Monday afternoon.

With Monday’s temperatures topping 21 degrees, and the children, aged between nine and 11, being on board for more than an hour, things were getting very uncomfortable.

But an employee from Morrison’s, behind the Lysaghts Institute, came to their aid when they spotted the yellow bus and came out, handing the youngsters bottles of water to keep them cool.

Head teacher Peter Knight said: “It was a very kind gesture.”
