TORFAEN council and Gwent Police have launched a scheme they hope will reduce metal thefts.
As part of ‘No ID? No Cash!’, scrap metal yards in Torfaen must only accept metal from scrap metal collectors registered with the council.
They must also carry a photograph ID card, which can be obtained free of charge from the council. Collectors must also carry a bound book including details of all the metal they have collected, including the name and address of where it was collected.
It is hoped these tighter restrictions will make it harder for metal thieves to sell their ill-gotten gains.
