THE National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children warned that neglect has doubled over the last two years to reach record levels.

New figures show that between April 2011 and March 2012, counsellors on its 24-hour freephone service dealt with more than 12,000 contacts, with 575 of these from Wales.

Of these, 27 calls from people in Newport were so serious that they required police or social services. Anyone who thinks a child is being neglected, or suffering any kind of abuse, should call NSPCC on 0808 800 5000, email help@nspcc.org.uk or report online at www.nspcc.org.uk/helpline.
