AFTER more than three years of fundraising in memory of their beloved son, a Newport couple described the "nice, warm feeling" as they finally saw their dream come true with the opening of their holiday home.

Wayne and Rose Yendle, of Pill, invited 11-times Paralympic swimming champion David Roberts CBE to open the holiday home at Kiln Park, near Tenby, which the couple have bought after raising £60,000 in memory of their 13-year-old son Ieuan.

Ieuan lost his battle against a mystery illness back in 2007 leading to Mr and Mrs Yendle setting up the Ieuan the Lion memorial fund.

The aim was to raise at least £45,000 to provide a static holiday caravan for terminally ill and disabled children to enjoy free breaks with their families after Ieuan and his family had created many happy memories themselves at holiday homes.

But with communities rallying round, the total raised now stands at £60,000.

The holiday home, including a decking area, ended up costing around £48,000 and Mr Yendle said the remaining funds will now be used to maintain the holiday home so that families can enjoy the holiday home and entertainment at the park for free.

It would otherwise cost families around £130 to stay at the park for a week.

The first family is due to enjoy the new home next month.

Ieuan’s illness led to him being robbed of his sight, speech and mobility over the three years prior to his death.

But the cause of his disability and death eluded his doctors and a post-mortem examination also failed to determine it.

Speaking about finally having the holiday home open in his son’s memory, Mr Yendle said: "It’s a very surreal feeling. We started all this off in 2009 when it was just a dream and we had our doubters. It’s just a nice, warm feeling now."
