A NEWPORT school held its own Olympic torch relay to celebrate London 2012.

All 350 children from St Mary’s RC Primary were at a special assembly at the school to mark the beginning of an Olympic-themed month, with each class dressed in the colours of the country they are representing.

A child from each class then took part in a special torch relay route around the school with their own cardboard torches before parading around the school grounds waving their country’s flag.

The children also watched the Beijing opening ceremony and found out about the London Olympics during the morning.

The next month will see the children try out different sports and do work with an Olympic theme.

PE co-ordinator Emma Young said: “The children all really enjoyed it. They had a lovely time.”
