MUSIC lovers are set to flock to Newport later this month as part of celebrations for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Busk on the Usk is one of 12,000 events being held across the UK and run in conjunction with the London 2012 Festival, taking place before, during and after the Games.

The free one-day event on June 30 will feature performances from Cwmbran’s Green Gartside, better known as 80s pop favourite Scritti Politti, indie rock singer Anna Calvi, singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon, Newport man and former Mekon Jon Langford, Newport band Dirty Goods and many more.

Street performers and stallholders will take up residence along the banks of the River Usk, which will be run in conjunction with Newport’s Big Splash Festival now in its third year.

Audiences can also enjoy a series of live gigs, discussions and lectures at the Riverfront Theatre and the University of Wales Newport’s city centre campus, organised by Wales’ leading contemporary music and arts event, Green Man Festival, Swn Festival, the Do Lectures and others.

A series of seminars and talks on local regeneration and business will also being held, with speakers including Dave Robinson of record label Stiff Records, and Owen Hatherley, author of Militant Modernism and Guide to the New Ruins of Great Britain.

Outdoor entertainment along the riverfront is free and accessible to anyone.

Free tickets for gigs and talks in the Riverfront theatre and the city centre campus are limited but will be available at the Riverfront box office.
