NEWPORT pupils marked this year’s Refugee Week by learning about the issues affecting refugees.

The students at Bassaleg School were taking part in the event, organised in partnership with the British Red Cross, to highlight issues such as honour-based violence, human trafficking and forced marriages.

This week, students will celebrate the positive contribution refugees make to Gwent.

On Friday, students attended presentations by Amnesty International, the Chinese Cultural Centre and Forced Marriage Unit, enjoyed performances by Zimbabwean drummers, observed African cookery demonstrations, sampling food from different parts of Africa, and participated in Zumba dance classes.

Deputy head Lee Jarvis said: “This has been a great opportunity to link the work of the Red Cross with a school of such a large population, engaging and raising awareness on a range of international issues which have the potential to have an impact on all our lives at some point.”
