A TEAM of MPs is to hold a short inquiry into the future of the 'Welsh Cavalry'.

There are concerns the upcoming strategic defence review will see the Queen's Dragoon Guards (QDG), also known as the 'Welsh Cavalry', merged with another to cut costs.

Chairman of the Welsh Affairs Committee David Davies, MP for Monmouth, said the committee will hold a one-off evidence session on the regiment He said the government needed to explain its thinking: "Disbanding the QDG would reduce opportunities for young people across Wales to serve in a named Welsh regiment.

“We need to make sure Wales is not unfairly treated by these defence cuts and the committee will be asking for submissions from veterans and soldiers currently serving in the QDG."

Jessica Morden, Newport East MP and a committee member, said: "There's huge support for keeping the Queen's Dragoon Guards which has been shown by the rally last week and what we've been getting in our postbag."
