YOUR South Wales Argus competed against the UK's biggest media names last night, and came away with an award.

Its honour came at the Online Media Awards held at the Emirates stadium, home of home of Arsenal FC in London last night.

The Argus website won a commendation for its use of social media, finishing second only to The Guardian, and seeing off competition from the likes of The Times and UK news website the Huffington Post. We were the only regional newspaper shortlisted for the award.

The website was recognised for its coverage of the Niktta Grender murder trial which saw Argus reporters sending Twitter updates from a court case for the first time.

Digital Editor Martin Wade said he was "delighted" at the award, saying: "It was good to see the Argus showing we can compete against much bigger, national websites and produce award-winning content.

"It's testament to the hard work our reporting team of Natalie Crockett, Ben Frampton and Ailsa Chalk, that we've been recognised like this."

Argus Editor Kevin Ward added: "Our use of Twitter to cover the dreadful Nikitta Grender murder trial was ground-breaking and it shows how we are delivering news, sport and information to our readers when and how they want it, by newspaper, PCs, mobiles, tablets or social media."

Southwalesargus.co.uk was also shortlisted for the Best Regional Website category.
