THE housewarming held at historic Tredegar House yesterday was a huge success, with hundreds of people taking the opportunity to look around the grounds.

The free event, which took place in the gardens and parkland, featured music, performances and plenty of family fun.

The crowds did not let the heavy showers spoil their fun, as they sheltered under the trees for picnics and danced under umbrellas to the music.

Making an appearance were Lilygreen and Maguire, who have recently supported Westlife and Olly Murs. There were also performances from Duffryn High School Choir, Cardiff Style Ladies Close Harmony Choir, Blaenavon Male Voice Choir, Nidus Children’s Choir and Cor yr Dreigiau.

Isobelle Hunt, from Cwmbran, was visiting the event with her daughter Penny.

She said: “We just came down and saw this was going on. It was a pleasant surprise. We visit here often, and it’s a nice atmosphere here today.

“I like seeing the young people being given an opportunity to perform.

“There should be more events like this here.”

Visitors also took the opportunity to try medieval and baroque dancing with My Lady’s Dancers with the LedburyWaytes.

More entertainment came from Maindee Judo Club, Duffryn Gems and Diamonds, Duffryn Divas belly dancers, Meirion Owen and the Quack Pack and Black Mountain Falconry.

The housewarming event also featured funfair rides, food stalls, and games and activities.

The event was free as the National Trust wanted to welcome members of the community and beyond to be part of a new chapter in Tredegar House’s story.

National Trust visitor experience coordinator Steffan Ellis said: “It’s great to see lots of people coming to watch local dance groups and choirs perform, and to see the grounds.

“We wanted to welcome the community so that they can see the changes that have taken place, such as offering a more interactive family fun- filled experience.”

Grade I listed Tredegar House is regarded as one of the most outstanding houses of the Restoration period in Britain.

The event marked the National Trust taking over the care of the property from Newport City Council earlier this year.
