THE pink tutus, fairy wings and face paint were out in full force yesterday as more than 2,000 women took part in Cwmbran’s Race for Life.

With their dedication to their loved ones pinned to the back of their t-shirts, 2,185 women took on the five-kilometre course at Northfields Recreation Ground in aid of Cancer Research UK.

With the number of participants this year smashing last year’s figure – when 1,900 took part – organiser Katie Robbshawsaid it is hoped the event will raise around £90,000.

She said: “Last year we raised just over £88,000, so we are hoping to reach £90,000 this year. It’s a beautiful venue and such a really supportive community.”

Among those taking part wereWendy Rees and daughter Charlotte, of Cwmbran.

Mrs Rees said: “We’re running for three members of our family who are fighting cancer – my dad, my father-in-law and my uncle. We’re doing it to support them in their fight for survival.”

Alyson Smith and daughter Shelley, of Newbridge, ran with Eleanor Clifford and her daughter, Abbie, of Oakdale.

The four were running it for family members Sheila James and Mo Bowen.

Mrs Smith said: “They are both surviving cancer and we wanted to raise lots of money.

It’s been a great atmosphere today.” Other people from outside Gwent also travelled to take part in the race, including Kristie O’Connell, 20, of Merthyr Tydfil, who took the winning title, completing the race in just over 20 minutes. She said: “I’mreally pleased. My friend’s mum passed away from cancer and my friend asked me to do it.

I’m doing it for other family and friends too.”
