THE grandson of renowned Newport club owner, the late John Sicolo who owned the legendary TJ’s bar is keeping his legacy alive by opening a music venue in the city.

Inspired by his grandfather, who was dedicated to the Newport music scene and owned TJ’s for more than 40 years until his death two years ago, Ashley Sicolo, 21, is preparing to open The 200 Club on Stow Hill on Friday.

Mr Sicolo plans to hold live music ranging from rock to soul, blues, Jazz, alternative and reggae at the club, as well as comedy nights and DJs.

Mr Sicolo, who gained an insight into the music industry when he began working at TJ’s aged 15.

He said: "This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while but have been waiting for the right time."

"I’m excited and proud to be continuing the legacy left by my grandfather," he added.

"I'm grateful for all the support from friends and family who have helped turn my vision into reality," he added.

The news comes just days after the Argus reported that one of Newport's busiest live music venues Le Pub, on Caxton Place, is up for sale. The venue is being sold as a going concern but would not have to continue as a site for live music.

The 200 Club, close to the music venue '6fu' opens at 9pm on Friday and will feature resident DJ Jazzy B and special guests, then on Saturday Devastation Presents and Ten Cent Toy perform. Local band Big Mac’s Wholly Soul Band take to the stage on Sunday night’s soul night.
