GWENT children showed off their skills during a Welsh folk dancing festival in Newport at the weekend.

Around 100 children from 12 schools across the area took part in the event held at Spytty Sports Village on Saturday.

The festival was organised by the Newport-based Cymdeithas Gwyl Plant Gwent, who provide Welsh folk dance lessons in schools.

These dances are then demonstrated every summer through the festival.

Schools taking part included Always Primary, Caldicot West End Infants, Ringland Primary and Caerleon Endowed Infants School.

Parents also joined in the fun as well as Newport’s Deputy Mayor, Councillor Cliff Suller.

Organiser, Dawn Webster said: “We have been holding festival of Welsh folk dance for the children of Gwent since 1981 in Abertillery, Abergavenny, Cwmbran and Newport during the summer term.”

“We provide the teachers with the resources to teach our dances in their schools and with information for Welsh folk costume, which the parents help to make.”

“Everyone enjoys the festival day, the teachers were happy to see the result of their hard work. The children were excited to show everyone what they have learnt and many spectators joined in with some of the dances.”

Forthcoming events include the Abertilllery Festival which takes place between 10am and noon and the Cwmbran Festival in Gwent Square between 10am and noon and 2pm and 4pm, both on July 7.
