PLANS by Gwent Police to keep more than three quarters of its workforce on the front line should stand it in good stead to keep crime down despite officer cuts.
That’s according to the Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC), which yesterday said Gwent Police is in a good position to deal with government spending cuts.
Despite plans to reduce officer numbers by 130, the force wants 78 per cent of its workforce in frontline roles by 2015.
The news came on the day the HMIC said three forces – the Metropolitan, Devon & Cornwall and Lincolnshire – may not be able to provide a sufficiently efficient or effective service in the future.
HM Inspector of Constabulary for the Western Region, Dru Sharpling, said Gwent Police’s history of reducing costs has put them in a good position to meet the financial challenges of the UK government’s spending review.
