A GWENT man will be celebrating his 100th birthday tomorrow in the same house he was born in.

Gethin Davies was born in Croescarneinion Farm, Rhiwderin, Newport, in 1912.

This weekend he and members of his family will celebrate his 100th birthday with a special hog roast at the same farm this weekend – where he has lived all his life.

Mr Davies was born to his mother and father Hannah and John Davies – he was one of seven children.

Grammar school boy Mr Davies finished his education at 17 when he took on a butcher shop set up by his father in Machen.

But his father died when Mr Davies was 18 years old, and the youngster came back to run the farm with his brother Courtney.

When his brother married and moved away, Mr Davies took over the farm with the support of his mother and his four younger sisters.

During the Second World War farmers were given dispensation to continue to work and Mr Davies remained at Croescarneinion Farm.

He married Edna David in 1948, and the couple have had four children – Marian, Jane, Ruth and Edward – as well as nine grandchildren.

Mr Davies later bought his farm from Lord Tredegar in the mid-1950s.

Gradually Edward Davies, 60, has taken over the farm from his father.

In his 100th year Mr Davies still has his independence and doesn’t rely on carers to get himself dressed or to have a shave. He still enjoys the odd dram of whiskey.

Asked why Mr Davies has never moved away, daughter Marian Harris said: “He loves the place, the countryside is lovely.

Farming was in his blood.”
