USK FARMERS' Club welcomed 150 primary school children to the Usk Showground for an unveiling of a memorial stone.

The pupils joined the club in unveiling a memorial to their previous Patron, Fitzroy John Somerset, 5th Baron Lord Raglan, who died in 2010. The memorial stone has been erected alongside the avenue of oaks planted last year, and named Fitzroy Avenue in Lord Raglan's honour.

As Lord Raglan was a lifelong supporter of Usk Show and was particularly interested in children's competitions, the club saw it fitting to invite pupils from schools to compete on the day.

Children from Usk, Raglan, Gilwern, Llanfair Kilgeddin, Ysgol y Fenni and Gladstone in Cardiff were joined by a party of children from the Ukraine, who were visiting the area as part of the annual Children of Chernobyl scheme last week.

The children participated in a cross-country race around the showground, watched new Patron, David Morgan D L, unveil the stone and then enjoyed a picnic lunch. Also present were MP David Davies, AM Nick Ramsey and Usk Mayor, Christine Wilkinson.

The race was won by George Anthony, a Year 6 pupil from Raglan Primary and the first girl to cross the line was Hannah Jones, also Year 6 and from Raglan.
