CHILDREN affected by the Chernobyl nuclear disaster learned about Newport sports teams as part of their visit to the city.
The eight youngsters received memorabilia from Newport County and Newport Gwent Dragons at a party at Newport East Community Centre on Friday.
Pupils from Lliswerry High School presented them with gifts at the party. Tesco in Spytty, provided food and goody bags.
Children’s entertainer Mr Chips entertained with balloon artistry and a disco.
Their month-long visit is funded by Victims of Chernobyl Children’s Fund.
Melin Homes and Newport City Homes each donated £200 to the charity, which aims to give children with health problems caused by leaked radiation at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, in Ukraine, fun experiences in an unpolluted environment to improve their health.
Staff at Newport East Community Centre are collecting toiletries and good quality clothing, which will be taken to the country and donated to needy families by lorry in September.
