STEELWORKERS at Newport's Llanwern site are set to have their hours reduced and pay cut as Tata Steel attempts to cut costs.

The Indian firm who own the Newport plant and its larger sister site at Port Talbot have been holding talks with unions to discuss plans aiming to reduce hours until the market recovers.

A spokesman for Tata Steel said the move was coming about in order to “meet demand” and as a result of “incredibly challenging times.”

He added: “The shift pattern will be moving from a 24/7 operation to a daytime operation" and that this meant workers would lose out on the opportunity of overtime and night shifts.
