A £120,000 project to restore one of Pontypool Park's major attractions has been completed.

The work to restore the impressive Nant-y-Gollen ponds was carried out after Torfaen council managed to secure £70,000 of Tidy Towns funding in 2011.

Torfaen added £50,000 to restore the ponds and introduce natural planting to the area.

The project involved relining the existing stone walls of the ponds with concrete to create a waterproof structure and redesigning the inlet and outlet of water to and from the ponds.

Island beds were also planted to benefit local wildlife.

Torfaen consulted with the Environment Agency throughout the project and the works were carried out by Gavin Nightingale and JC Wheeler Plant Hire.

"This has been a fantastic project and the benefits are very clear to see to anyone who enjoys walking through Pontypool Park," said John Cunningham, Torfaen's executive member for Neighbourhood services."

These ponds are just one of the many features in the historical park and this work has ensured their future."

I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this project and thank Pontypool Park Friends Group for the work they have done throughout the park."

The Nant-y-Gollen ponds were originally one large millpond which was the power source for the forge further down the stream. The ponds were redesigned in the early 1970s and again in the early 1990s.
