THE Secretary of State for Wales spoke about the “invaluable” relationship the UK has with Bangladesh at a celebration event in Newport yesterday.

Cheryl Gillan was at a Celtic Manor gala dinner, attended by the High Commissioner to Bangladesh, His Excellency Robert Gibson.

The event was held to celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of the Wales Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce (WBCC) and its trade mission, which was supported by the Welsh Government last autumn.

“TheUKis one of the biggest investors in Bangladesh, providing around £2 billion in investment in projects.

“Purely in these terms, the relationship between our two countries is invaluable but in many more ways, we have a great deal to offer each other,” Mrs Gillan told the audience.

“There is huge potential to establish foreign trade links with Welsh businesses which WBCC are exploiting to great effect.”

The WBCC’s aim is to explore investment opportunities in Bangladesh as well as boosting trade relations with Wales.

Seventeen group meetings took place at the trade mission in the autumn and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Mrs Sheikh Hasina saw what it had to offer.
