PUPILS at Llantarnam School, Cwmbran, grabbed their goggles and donned their lab coats to help British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru.

Their effort was to launch a nationwide competition that is open to schools to design a model heart as part of the Support Our Science (SOS) campaign.

The pupils put on their thinking caps to take up the challenge of designing and making a model to demonstrate how blood is pumped around the body.

The winning model will be turned into a kit by the BHF to help young people learn about the organ.

Joel Griffiths, a teacher at Llantarnam School, said: “It’s fantastic to give the children a fun and interesting science project to work on, while at the same time they learn how the heart works and why it’s important to keep it in good condition.”

The competition is a key part in highlighting the value of BHF-funded research.

Debbie Allen, programme lead for the BHF’s children and young people’s team, said: “Science is all about exciting discoveries and we’re supporting leading scientists making important breakthroughs in heart research.”

The competition is open to all 11 to 18-year-olds and the models must be made from everyday household materials.

Models must be submitted before November 30.
