PONTYPOOL Carnival attracted more than 1,000 people despite the rain.

The day began with a traditional parade through the town centre, which was led this year by the Chairman of Pontypool Community Council Cllr Barry Taylor who is also a Torfaen County Borough Council.

The walkers were dressed in Olympic themed costumes including one carrying an Olympic Torch.

More than 500 people lined the street to watch the parade wind its way to Pontypool Park.

Cllr Taylor said: "It was a fabulous day and it's great that Pontypool is getting into the Olympic spirit.

"The rain did come down but most of the day the people were happy that the rain stayed away.

"It was great that the market stall holders were there as well to sell their products and join in with the carnival."
