THE Mayor of Newport met six Belarussian children at Tredegar House last week as part of their visit to Newport with the charity Victims of Chernobyl Children’s Fund.
The children, who all suffer from radiation-related diseases, were on a 28-day stay in Gwent, organised by Marcia Doyle from Caldicot, who has been hosting groups in her home for the last 24 years.
The charity also wanted to raise awareness of its need for donations including new toasters, kettles and peak condition wheelchairs to be taken to a special home in the disaster area which tries to help disabled people who stay there with life skills.
Mrs Doyle said the trips were important so people “did not forget the lessons of Chernobyl and the long-term effects of the disaster”.
If you would like to donate to the charity, contact Mrs Doyle on 01291 422694.
