A TOTAL of 20 postmen and women were attacked in the Gwent area by dogs over the last year.

The postmen and women were attacked across the NP postcode area between April 2011 and April 2012. These attacks had increased by 17 per cent on the previous year.

The Royal Mail and Communication Workers Union is appealing to dog owners in Gwent to help keep animals under control, especially during the school holidays, which is when the number of attacks usually peak.

The Royal Mail has already spent more than £100,000 on awareness campaigns and equipment to help postmen and women reduce risk of injury.

The company also issued 90,000 posting pegs, used to put letters through the letterbox and protect the fingers.
