A PROJECT which has rehabilitated Chepstow-based soldiers has received a special award.

Operation Nightingale, which has helped injured 1 Rifles servicemen men through archaeology, was recognised in the British Archaeologica lAwards.

The project, based at Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, came to Caerleon in March, as reported by the Argus.

Soldiers worked on the site digging trenches and revealed the walls of a Roman building.

Father-of-four Corporal Steven Winterton, of 1 Rifles, said at the time the project gave him and his fellow soldiers new opportunities on their return from Helmand Province: “We’re used to opening up holes and living in them, now we are opening up holes and seeing what’s in them.”

He begins a degree in archaeology this year.

The project was set up by 1 Rifles Sergeant Dermot Walshe with Ministry of Defence archaeologist Martin Brown.

Last month Sgt Walshe gave a talk to Chepstow’s branch of the Royal British Legion about the impact the project had on local soldiers.
