CHARITY fundraisers took to the rugby field on Saturday to battle it out for their chosen cause.

Eight teams, each supporting their own charity, braved the rain to take part in the tournament, organised by Chepstow Rugby Club.

Among the players was former soldier Richard Brown, who put together a team in aid of the Welsh Warrior Richard Hunt Foundation.

Remarkably the team, who had never played together before the weekend, made it through to the finals but missed out in the last match.

Mr Brown, 41, a former lance corporal with the Coldstream Guards, decided to take part to give something back to the charity, which is helping him with his battle against post-traumatic stress disorder.

Supporters are still totting up the fundraising total, but Hazel Hunt, who set up the foundation in memory of her son, Richard, who died while serving in Afghanistan in 2009, said it was a great effort by all.

She said: “Everybody there enjoyed themselves, although they are all probably feeling a bit sore today.

“To come second out of eight teams is fantastic. It was an amazing effort by everybody and it was a lot of fun.”
