UP to 1,200 homes could be created on the site of a former Rogerstone factory as part of a regeneration scheme unveiled at a public exhibition over the weekend.

The two-day exhibition, organised by Walters Group, which bought the site of the former Novelis factory in March, and held at Mandrake House, revealed plans to create between 700 and 1,200 homes, a new primary school, family restaurant and pub, convenience store, green space and play area and to retain a drill hall for community use.

The company has said it will retain significant trees and the pond area, where they hope to build a bridge.

More than 30 people visited the exhibition on Friday morning, many showing support for the proposal, while some expressed concerns about noise and disruption during construction.

Bryan Hollister, of Tregwilyn Road, lives opposite the site.

He said: “It will be great to see the site re-developed.

“The school and shop are needed, though I do think a medical centre should be included in the proposals.”

Another nearby resident, who did not wish to be named, welcomed the plans for a school and play area, and added: “Keeping the drill hall and building a pub will help socially.”

Clive Jones, of Laurel Road, Bassaleg, was supportive of bringing housing and businesses to the area, but voiced concerns about noise pollution during construction.

His house overlooks the site, and as well as describing it as an “eyesore”, he also dislikes the current traffic congestion.

He said: “The roads need upgrading to cope with more traffic. The congestion on roads around the site and bypass are dreadful, especially in the mornings.”

Graig Community Councillor Don Evans, who worked at the factory for more than 40 years, said: “I don’t think we need more housing. We could end up with 1,000 people moving to the area and not a factory providing 1,000 jobs, which would be great.”

Fellow councillor Keith Harries added: “It’s a mammoth job to get the site prepared.

In the current economic climate, where will the money come from?”

Aspokeswoman for Walters Group confirmed they will submit an application for planning permission to Newport City Council in September.
