THE RSPCA is appealing for information after three cats died of poisoning within hours of each other in Newport.

The cats, from the Bryn Bevan area of the city, were let out on July 29 and came home between then and July 30 at different times showing symptoms of fitting and vomiting. One has since been put to sleep and the other two have died, having suffered from renal failure as a result of eating something toxic.

RSPCA inspector Sophie Daniels warned people to take care in storing toxic substances and urged neighbours to look out for each others’ pets.

She said: “We would also ask perpetrators to be aware that deliberate poisoning could mean a £20,000 fine and/or six months in prison.”

“Owners should be vigilant and contact a vet immediately if they suspect their pet may have been in contact with a toxic substance or if they see any warning signs or symptoms. The sooner the cat is treated, the better their chances of surviving.”

Anyone with information should telephone 0300 123 8018. Calls will be treated in confidence.
