A GWENT MP has said a move by the leader of the Liberal Democrats to block a bill that would have seen the number of MPs cut in Wales was good news for Newport.

Labour members in Newport could be faced with a choice between MPs Paul Flynn and Jessica Morden if changes to boundaries are introduced that will see a single seat set to cover most of the city.

Nick Clegg, deputy prime minister, has said he will instruct his MPs to vote against a bill that would have seen the number of MPs cut in Wales from 40 to 30.

But despite the prime minister David Cameron's insistence that he will push ahead with boundary changes Newport West MP Paul Flynn said the plan is doomed.

Under proposals from the boundary commission for Wales the Newport East and West seats would disappear with a Newport Central seat covering most of the city.

Mr Flynn said Mr Cameron's stance is "empty bravado".

He said the turn of events was "good news for Newport" and for Wales: "It would have been a difficult situation."

"If there's no changes in the House of Lords it would be an outrage to weaken the House of Commons by reducing it by 50 MPs," he said.

Mr Flynn said on his blog earlier this year that party members would have had to choose between Jessica Morden and him next year.
