CARE home staff laced up their trainers to walk at least 135 miles to raise awareness of Alzheimer's Disease.

Peter Coughlin, from Newport, took a week out from his job as a chef at Ty Enfys Care Home, Cardiff, to raise more than £2,000 for the Alzheimer's Society.

With his father Chris driving a support car lent by Sytner, Newport, Mr Coughlin and several members of kitchen staff including Conor Derbyshire, 18, walked from Ammanford to Caldicot, stopping to visit nine care homes owned by Hallmark Homes on the way.

The four day 'Chef Trek' was completed on Monday as the team stopped at the Argus' office on their way to a well-earned rest.

For Mr Coughlin, 40, it was the end of a fundraiser for a cause close to his heart, not just working in an environment where people do suffer from Alzheimer's.

His grandmother Gweneth Coughlin, who was born in Newport, was diagnosed with the disease 18 months before she passed away at the age of 83 in 1998."

My grandmother changed from a very strong lady into a lady who lost her enthusiasm and will to do anything. When she died I promised myself I would do something to raise awareness of dementia," Mr Coughlin said.

The last leg of the journey was from the Cherry Tree care home, in Caldicot to Ty Enfys.

A couple of the residents and a few other members of staff joined in on the way.
