THE owners of a Newport store told how their daughter was knocked to the floor by a customer who became aggressive.

Sarah Tayler, 37, who works part-time at MG & MV Tayler’s on Church Street, took a knock to her head during the assault which happened at around 6pm on Thursday.

Malcolm Tayler,68, was working behind the counter with wife Mary, 68, on a busy evening when a man, woman and young girl came into the store to buy alcohol.

He said: "The couple were boisterous and clearly had had a drink which immediately put me on guard.

"There were several customers so I buzzed the intercom for Sarah to come and help.

"The woman asked for two bottles of Lambrini which I got and Sarah served them.

"They wanted cans of Carling and when Sarah tried to tell them about the special offers to save them money the man wouldn’t listen and became aggressive. She took the cans away and he started throwing packets of chewing gum everywhere."

Ms Tayler, who sustained bruising to her head and is recovering at home, said: "I tried to stop him but he pushed me and I fell and hit my head on the floor. It all happened so fast."

They left the shop in the direction of Caerleon Road and Ms Tayler was taken to The Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport but later released.

Gwent Police say the man is described as in his forties, of stocky build and was wearing a sand coloured top. The woman was dressed in black and had long red curly hair and the child is described as being about eight or nine years old with red hair.

Anyone with information is asked to call Gwent Police on 101.
