A "STREET level" Newport drug dealer was given a suspended sentence.

Kamran Hussain, 19, appeared at Newport Crown Court after pleading guilty to possession of cannabis with intent to supply and supplying cannabis.

Prosecutor Gareth James said two police officers were on patrol near Maindee School in Newport on January 28 when they spotted Hussain, of Harrow Road.

He was seen to drop something and, when officers picked it up, it turned out to be 0.7gr of cannabis worth about #10, Hussain was arrested and his home searched, which turned up two stashes of cannabis, weighing 23.5gr and 26.7gr, along with drugs paraphernalia, including self-seal bags and weighing scales. A mobile phone with texts relating to drug deals was also recovered.

The court heard Hussain admitted in police interview that he dealt cannabis on a street level. to make money and fund his own habit.

Defending, David Webster said Hussain was a "foolish young man"who had brought shame on his family.

Hussain was given an eight-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with an 18-month supervision requirement and 240 hours unpaid work.
