A TREDEGAR man crashed his car carrying his children after a day drinking at an Olympics event in Cardiff, a court heard.

Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court heard how Gary Colling crashed his Peugeot 306 while more than twice the legal limit, with his two young children needing treatment following the incident.

Prosecutor Mark Salter said Colling had left his vehicle at Ebbw Vale train station on August 3 and travelled into Cardiff with his children.

The court heard how he had drank consistently through the day as they watched an Olympics event in the city, before they caught a train home.

However, after returning to Ebbw Vale, the 33-year-old then tried to drive home to Stable Lane, Tredegar.

But, at 10.45pm, when driving along St James’ Way, he collided with a Suzuki while its driver was trying to do a three-point turn, shunting it into a parked Vauxhall.

Mr Salter said all three sustained "significant damage", while Mr Colling’s two children were treated by a paramedics after complaining of pain from the impact.

The police were called and Colling was found to have 78 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 mililitres of breath- with the legal limit 35 microgrammes of alcohol.

He admitted driving with excess alcohol with defence solicitor Nathan Fear saying that Colling had intended to catch a taxi home.

However, none were available and as he "felt OK", he decided to drive, adding: "The Suzuki was turning on the brow of a hill and it would have been impossible for anyone to have been aware of it".

The defendant was disqualified from driving for 18 months, ordered to pay a £250 fine, £85 costs and £15 victim surcharge.
