NEWPORT'S Olympic hero Fred Evans will be one of many to take part in this year's Pill Carnival on Monday.

The popular annual event starts with the procession at 2pm from the bottom of Alexandra Road.

Marching bands, Minnie and Mickey Mouse, floats, walking entrants and even mobility scooters will form this year's procession.

There will be floats from two local boxing clubs and a carnival queen float.

Silver medalist Fred Evans will be on the 'champion of champions' float organised by St Joseph's Boxing Club.

During the procession money will be collected for Ieuan the Lion Memorial Fund and the For Luca appeal.

The carnival, which goes on till 8pm, will then continue on Pill Millennium Fields with a large fair, a wide variety of food stalls and live bands performing on a stage.

Other activities include a bouncy castle and face painting.

The carnival will award £100 for the best float and other prizes will be given for the best walking entrants and the best mobility scooter entrants.

Ann Barton, who helps organise the carnival, said: "It's one of Wales' biggest carnivals and everybody has a lovely day.

"It's a traditional carnival and there's not many of them left.

As long as we get the support we'll keep it going."
