SIXTY Six per cent of entries across all Newport school achieved the higher grades of A* to C - above the Wales average by 0.6 percentage points.
Entries achieving the top A* - A grades was 21.5 per cent, higher than the average across Wales by 2.3 percentage points.
Councillor Bob Poole, cabinet member for education and young people’s services said: “Today’s GCSE results are fantastic for Newport’s pupils and school staff. I would like to offer my congratulations to students on their success and wish them well on the next stage of their journey. It is especially pleasing to note that the number of pupils achieving the top grades is higher than the Welsh average and this is testament to the high standard of education in our city’s schools.”
From September, Newport City Council will be working closely with the new Education Achievement Service (EAS) for South East Wales, which was formed by Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen to provide increased levels of challenge and support to schools.
The EAS will work with governors, school leaders and staff to improve the learning experiences of children and young people and, through this, enhance their success in national examinations and opportunities for employment.
