PASSENGERS have been experiencing delays of over an hour at Newport train station this morning due to a signalling fault.
Several commuters were tweeting about cable theft but British Transport Police confirmed there has been no criminal action.
Commuter Jason Smith tweeted: "Cable theft outside Newport train station is causing chaos. Hard to believe Network Rail haven’t found some form of solution."
Cellan tweeted: "Arggghhhh – stuck on the train at Newport station due to cable theft!!! Obviously thieves had a lie in till 8.30 today."
A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Police attended the station along with Network Rail inspectors and investigations show there was a fault with the signals and no criminality."
A spokesman for Network Rail said: "A track circuit failed at about 8.30 this morning, holding two signals at red.
"Relief lines were then unavailable and everything ground to a halt. "Investigations showed a transformer was defective.
"We apologise for the delay, but it’s just one of those things that happen. "Equipment was replaced at 10.45am and everything is now up and running."
