AN ABERGAVENNY residential home was transformed into an Olympic village for the day.

Centenarian Violet Lewis, 103, was among 26 residents at Penpergwm House in Abergavenny to compete in events from basketball to badminton and fast walking.

Torchbearer Malcolm Green, of Cwm, near Ebbw Vale, carried his torch to lead the relay through the grounds to the ‘Olympic Park’ ahead of the opening ceremony.

Resident Ann Lees, 87, who was one of the first two people in the country to set up a branch of Riding for The Disabled, said she was thrilled to be presented with two silver medals presented by Mr Green in badminton and the six-metre fast walking course.

Mrs Lees said she has been watching the Paralympics with pride, having taught Paralympic GB equestrian team member, Lee Pearson to ride as a youngster.

Mrs Lewis was narrowly beaten to a medal in the fast walking course but declared it “was the best time ever”.

Following the medal ceremony, residents enjoyed an Olympic-themed tea and held several stained-glass hoops they made during recent art workshops that depict activities held at the home. The hoops featured on a float at the recent Llanthony Show and won third prize.

Vicky Wilson, activities development officer for the home and cultural Olympiad artist, said: “Having been involved with the 2012 Cultural Olympiad, I wanted to continue the legacy to reignite and inspire residents to take part in the sports they hadn’t played for years.”
