Bettws remembers 9/11 terror victims
12:32pm Wednesday 12th September 2012 in News By Argus reporter
HUNDREDS of people gathered at the Bettws Shopping Centre yesterday for the estate’s annual memorial for victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the USA.
Residents joined standard bearers, churchgoers, councillors, veteran soldiers and schoolchildren from around Newport in remembering those killed in the attacks 11 years ago.
The memorial at the community gardens began the year after the attacks in 2001, but was then made an annual event.
It is also used to remember servicemen who have lost their lives in conflicts since and acts as a reminder of peace and reconciliation. As well as readings from local schoolchildren, hymns were sung and candles lit, including one by head boy at Newport High School Jacob McCarthey.
