IT’S a sporting family affair for this Risca family with three generations all throwing themselves into the martial art of judo.

Kathie Rousen, 54, has been coaching judo for around 30 years in the Risca area after her daughters got involved in the sport.

But now she has also inspired her grandchildren to take up the martial art, with her four-year-old grandson Donni being the latest recruit.

Mrs Rousen’s daughter Lorna Zorrilla, 37, who like her mum has a 3rd Dan black belt in the sport, and Lorna’s children Ronin, ten, Rico, six, and Donni all train with her at Samurai Judo Club based at St Margaret’s Church Hall, Malvern Terrace.

Mrs Rousen’s other daughters Jessica, 33, and Hannah, 30, have also done the sport in the past, gaining 1st Dan black belts.

Mrs Zorrilla said: “My sisters started judo as they were looking for something to do and my mum got involved too. I joined up as I didn’t want to be left out. It’s just run through the family.

“My mum’s seen thousands of people come through the doors over the years though.

“The club has taught many families how to have great fun and exercise while keeping themselves safe.”
