SOME of Gwent’s best young chefs battled it out at the weekend for a place among Michelin-starred professionals at the Newport Food Festival.

The semi-final of the teenage chef competition took place at Newport Indoor Market, where youngsters prepared dishes under the watchful eye of Michelin-starred judge Hywel Jones.

For the winners, it is on to the Newport Food Festival for the final, where they will compete on October 6.

The second annual event is set to attract thousands of people to the city, with demonstrations, masterclasses and banquets taking place around Newport.

Executive chef at the Michelinstarred Crown at Whitebrook James Sommerin is one of many set to demonstrate their skills.
