A MOTHERwas fined £75 for failing to send her daughter to school.

Catherine Hale, 36, of British School Close, Talywain, pleaded guilty to the offence, which happened between September 4, 2011, and July 15 this year, at Abergavenny Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

The court heard her daughter, Katie Owen, 14, attended Abersychan School on just 36 occasions out of a possible 141.

This amounts to 39 per cent.

Hale was asked to attend various meetings at the school to address the matter but failed to get in contact on many occasions.

Kevin Lines, defending, said Hale tried to get her daughter to school, but having seen her older sister truant in previous years it was proving difficult.

On many occasions, he said, Hale had dropped Katie at school, only for her to leave again.

However, knowing her mother had to attend court because of her behaviour seems to have had a positive effect, with Katie attending every day since the new term started, magistrates heard.

As well as the fine Hale was ordered to pay a £15 victim surcharge and £25 court costs.
