THESE are the winning images which will be used in a 2013 charity calendar following our competition to help Newport’s university mark 100 years of photography in the city.

The Argus launched a competition back in May calling on budding photographers to submit their iconic images of Newport with the chance of having their photo appear in the calendar.

The calendar will be produced by the University of Wales, Newport, and money raised will be donated to the Argus-backed Sparkle Appeal.

David Jones was named the overall winner from around 100 entries with his image of the East Usk Lighthouse at the Newport Wetlands. He wins a digital SLR camera.

Other winning images, which will feature in the calendar, include snaps of the Transporter Bridge, the River Usk and the Kingsway Centre.

An image of the University of Wales, Newport, city centre campus made up of images of pupils at Ysgol Gymraeg Ifor Hael, Bettws, will also be used.

The winning images were chosen by judges including Argus chief photographer Chris Tinsley, senior lecturer in photography at University of Wales, Newport, Dr Paul Cabuts, fundraising manager for the Sparkle Appeal Lisa Thomas, Sue Brown from the Kingsway Centre and photographer and author of “Newportrait” John Briggs.

The images are all on display in Topshop in the Kingsway Centre and the calendar is expected to be available from mid October at places including the Calendar Club store, Kingsway Centre.

Alumni officer at the university Carolyn Jenkins, who helped organise the competition, said: "Having seen the quality and imagination of all of the entries, I never realised how beautiful Newport could look. It was a very hard decision choosing the winners."
