A CARER from Newport has been nominated in the Oscars of the social care world for his work with Alzheimer’s patients.

Andrew Bain, 33, from Riverside, Newport, has been nominated for Best Residential Care Practitioner in the Wales Care Awards.

Mr Bain’s nomination is supported by colleagues at the Pentwyn House care home in Marshfield, where he is a senior care assistant.

Mr Bain cares for 15 of the 38 Pentwyn residents, who all suffer with dementia in varying degrees.

Anthea Sutton, a care assistant at Pentwyn House, said: “Nothing ever seems too much trouble for Andy, and even when he is busy, if you need help he is always at hand. When he has finished work with his team, he always goes to the other teams to see if they need any help.”

The wife of one of Pentwyn House’s elderly residents has decided to support Mr Bain’s nomination.

She said although her husband was unable to make his needs known verbally, Mr Bain, who is his key worker, instinctively picked up on his cues and responded thoughtfully, with respect and humour.

She said: “When I realised that P (my husband) needed to go to a nursing home it was a very hard and daunting decision to make.

“But Andrew’s care and attention and the empathy that he showed to all of us made the decision a little lighter.”

Mr Bain said: “I really enjoy being with the service users and listening to their histories.”

Mario Kreft, MBE, the chairman of Care Forum Wales, said: “It is a pleasure to honour all the finalists. Every one of them should be proud.”
