Chepstow spring an upset to earn home draw in cup

AMMANFORD 1 CHEPSTOW TOWN 2  - CHEPSTOW produced one of their best performances of the season by beating Second Division side Ammanford 2-1 away to progress to the next round of the Welsh Cup.

Town were not overawed by the side from a higher division and took control of the game from the first whistle.

With the Chepstow defence and midfield in full command Ammanford struggled to get into the game and Town could quite easily have been two goals up within the first ten minutes.

It was therefore no surprise when Town took the lead after 15 minutes.

Following good work by the Chepstow midfield the ball reached Richard Stansfield who found top goalscorer Jason Thorn with the perfect cross to enable him to score with a rare header from the edge of the penalty area.

Chepstow continued to put the home side under pressure and following some good inter passing the ball reached team captain Mark Dunn who scored on the half an hour to give Town a well deserved 2-0 lead at half time.

Ammanford must have been given a given a good roasting by their manager during the interval as they immediately began to put some pressure on the Chepstow defence.

However with Town goalkeeper, Callum George, again in fine form and the defenders in front of him performing magnificently the home side were unable to get the goal to put them back in the game.

As the game wore on the Chepstow forwards were also called on to play their part in defending the lead and this they did superbly.

With the game coming into the last ten minutes Ammanford gained a corner and from this set-piece central defender Luke Fayres headed an excellent goal.

Despite this setback Chepstow held on to their slender lead until the final whistle.

After the game Chepstow manager Russell Griffiths said how proud he was with his team’s performance against a side from a higher division and his wish for a home tie, after twice travelling to West Wales in the previous rounds, was granted when Town were drawn to play Cardiff Grange Harlequins on the weekend of November 10/11.
