NEWPORT council leaders have responded to a survey which has put the city among the UK's top ten fastest-growing retail centres over the next ten years.

Economic experts Experian released the findings in their annual independent retail report.

It showed Newport gained 14 places over the past year, with a city centre spend of £494.8 million on non essential items - to place it 87th in the UK.  With the city centre developments planned over the next few years this is set to rise to 70th – the seventh largest rise of any retail location in the UK.  A host of events are planned in the run up to Christmas to attract more shoppers into the city centre including festive markets, street entertainment and art and craft stalls.

Cllr Ed Townsend, cabinet member for economic development and regeneration and deputy leader of the council, said: "It is good to hear respected agencies showing confidence in the future of Newport.  Our city is very well placed to move quickly as soon as there is any sign of an improvement in the economy."  Council leader Matthew Evans added: "This is a timely boost for retailers and businesses. Newport’s unique appeal to businesses – its superb location, transport links, catchment area and workforce remain as strong as ever."

Newport received another boost when it was rated as the third best office location in the UK outside London in the Lambert Smith Hampton Study.
