RAILWAY: Older Newportonians may remember the steam engine turntable over the wall on the corner of Bridge Street and Godfrey Road. This was torn out when steam was finished in the 1960s.

Now a turntable for steam engines is back. Maybe not for full sized locomotives, but a turntable all the same.

It is at the City of Newport Model Engineering Society’s site at the Glebelands Park. The turntable is 12 feet long and can take locos weighing up to two tons, it can be raised and lowered to take locos off their owners trailers.

The loco pictured is owned and built by member Bob Foster, it weighs 3cwt/330lbs/152kg.

We open our 2000ft of track to the public on the first Saturday of the month (weather providing) from 11am to 4pm. Rides are £1 per person per ride.
